Poll: How do you promote your blog?

How do you put the word out about your blog? What have you done to bring traffic to your site?

I'm about to help this incredibly talented artist get his blog up and running and want to make sure as many people get to check out his cool pocket sized fireplaces and squirrel music videos as possible.

Though about 35% of my traffic comes from smutty Google searches (Welcome panty sniffers!) I've also submitted some things to bookmark sites like Digg, Slave to Target picked up on a rant about bad plus sized clothing and brought lots of folks over to say hello. Our amazing MILF group has been bringing in the hot tamales. And of course, all you kickass bloggers that link to Mom O Matic rock my world.

Any other ideas? Please help me with my homework and let me know what you do!

Seeing as how I don't get much traffic my way, I can't give out much sage advice.

All I do is comment on the awesome blogs I've found.

Technorati, The Good Blogs, lists like Blogger chicks (automated blog roll, everyone has it and that links other sites to yours). My traffic isn't phenomenal but I'm not trying to drive people to my site.

I think being out and about commenting on other posts gets people to your site as well.

Good luck to her!

I have no system. I generally just stalk other sites. =) But, here's one tip I found:
Keep track of blogs and leave comments on them. A good way to keep the conversation going is to install a MyBlogLog widget and visit the blog of people visiting your site.

I've never intentionally tried to drive traffic since I do not run ads or profit in any way from my blog, but showing us a teaser of his wares might be a good start.

Maybe he could hold a contest and give something small away as a prize?

Hi Lotta, just wanted to let you know that I have done a MILF post :)

He could list his site at blogtopsites.com and blogvillage.com, though I don't get tons of traffic from those two. He could also use Blog Explosion or Blogazoo. I participated in a Blog Carnival and that brought quite a bit of traffic. And leaving comments on other blogs...Thats all I got.

Webrings, baby. And comments. Lots of them.

Also, he can look up search words applicable to his site and use them frequently in his posts.

Shoot me an email and I'll tell you where to find the information.

I write keyword-based articles to drive traffic for websites as part of my freelance work. :)

it's all about whoring yourself out. comment on other blogs and link to those you like in hopes others will link to you. it takes awhile, but well worth it.

that and you could offer all your members free chocolate chip cookies if they go check out your friend's site.

Most excellent tips - thanks! Though it is making me realizing how lame I've been about leaving comments for my other blog reads lately...

How do you join a web ring? And what are all these sites like "Blogvillage.com"? So much I don't know and am not doing.

This is a great question.

So far, the most effective thing for me has been to spend lots of time visiting other people's sites and commenting.

I really think it's all about leaving meaningful comments. I leave 20-25 comments a day. A lot of traffic, like yours, seems to come from a lot of icky google searching ("Thailand sex" and so on) but I also get visits from people whose blogs I visit. I visit them .. and on it goes.

It depends a lot on objective. I don't care about commercial traffic and I don't visit commercial blogs. I want to find likeminded others.. so I am on Technorati, Blogging Chicks, ThailandVoice and others.

It keeps it going. :)

Peace,

Not that it's working much so far, but I've been using BlogExplosion. I think generating an audience is the most dicouraging part of blogging. It's disappointing to see other bloggers have lots of comments and things while you're waiting for your own. :/

I came over on the Slave to Target boat, btw.

You know, I just signed up for the 5 minutes for mom thing (link on my blog) and it's great. People are clicking thru, commenting and I am doing the same... :)

How can you tell what google searches were used to find your site, I'm rather new to this. Thanks

I do nothing. BUT looking at my blog stats my all time best post that still gets tons of hits and people Google search for is my first ever post about a birthday cake. People obviously like cake and pink poodles an awful lot. Combine sex with cake and you're onto a winner!
