Save The Spindle: Berwyn, Illinois

The Cermak Plaza Shopping Center in Berwyn, Illinois has so many amazing modern art sculptures. True and glorious junk art. But they are trying to tear it down because they think it's an eyesore. You know what's an eyesore? The abandoned Service Merchandise building from the 70's. But instead of simply fixing up the beat down strip mall, and keeping the art, they may level the whole thing. Including the kickass Spindle by artist Dustin Shuler.

I wish I'd known about the protest earlier in the summer, because I would have joined in to chant "Save The Kitsch!" But I did at least take the kids to get their picture taken in front of it the other day. Though son couldn't wrap his head around the idea that someone would want to take down a spike of cars. Me neither little dude. Me neither.

And where will they host the 2008 Cartopia show? Mmm, may I suggest on the pretty green lawn of the new strip mall owners?

Thanks!

OTJ - I forgot you used to live in the area. It would be so cool if they redid the mall and kept the sculptures. I'm sure it would become an attraction again.
